MAYUR VIHAR-II: Residents of Pocket A in Mayur Vihar-II do not have to travel too far for their daily groceries, for they have a nearby vegetable market catering to their needs 24x7. Lucky, you would think! Not quite, if you ask the residents. For the nearby vegetable market has become a bane of sorts for them. Reason: Illegal encroachments leading to daily traffic congestions.
Residents have been complaining of illegal encroachment by the roadside vendors, causing obstruction to their mobility. Concrete constructions have come up and the vegetable vendors refuse to move from their places.
"These shops have become virtually permanent, thanks to the illegal concrete construction. All these vendors have to do is cover their redis at night and resume their business in the morning," says a harassed resident. Repeated complaints to these vendors have not had any effect. "Traffic movement gets stalled every evening. The road gets crowded with people thronging to buy vegetables and vehicles also moving on the same road. When asked to move, these vendors say that they have been bribing local police and civic authorities, so no one can move them," complains Rakesh Aggarwal (name changed).
According to residents, complaining to the police also has not worked. Local police officials promise to look into the matter but the situation remains the same, complains another resident.
However, traffic congestions is just one of the problems for these people. "All kinds of people assemble near these vegetable vendors in the evening. We''ve had cases of eve-teasing on this road too. Women do not feel comfortable travelling down this road. This is another reason we want the encroachers to be moved, '''' says a resident on the conditions of anonymity.
